International Young Leaders Summit 2019 (IYLS), Suzhou, China

Three (3) of our students, Rafa Naufal Abidin, Hasna Luthfiah Azis and Kheisya Angelynn, all from HS10A, joined five (5) other students from BINUS SCHOOL Simprug and Serpong to form the 8-member combined BINUS SCHOOL delegation at the recent International Young Leaders Summit 2019 (IYLS).

The delegation was led by Mr. Erwin R. Montojo (Affective Education Coordinator). Ms. Elsie L. Bait (ECY/EL Principal of BINUS SCHOOL Serpong) and Mr. Francis B. Santoso (BINUS Board of Management) also joined me at the summit.

The summit which was hosted by Suzhou Science & Technology Foreign Language School was held from 3rd – 8th November 2019, in the beautiful city of Suzhou, China and was participated by 32 students from Singapore, Taiwan, China and Indonesia.

The summit centered on the theme “Strength in Unity, Creativity in Diversity” and provided students with opportunities to appreciate global issues related to culture, education, gender equality, and health from various cultural and national perspectives. It also allowed the students to explore creative solutions to the different issues that they identified using their diversity as strength.

We were proud to showcase our culture and heritage at the cultural exhibition segment of the summit. Our delegation was well prepared with a variety of cultural artefacts and icons and had the greatest number of visitors. The students’ schedule was packed with academic research sessions, presentations and debates for most parts of the summit. Nevertheless, they managed to have some time off to explore the city and cultural sites in Suzhou and learnt more about the city’s wide system of canals which is what Suzhou, or also affectionately known as, “Venice of the East”, is famous for.

Like a perfect icing to the cake, our BINUS SCHOOL delegation won the “Best Presentation” award which was presented at the closing ceremony. Well done, BINUSIANS!
