KARTINI DAY ASSEMBLY
All the children in Indonesia, including all the students in BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, have the right to receive quality and deserving education and have the freedom to excel in their academic and non-academic pursuits and passion, regardless of gender. This was the indelible legacy of Ibu Raden Ajeng Kartini, which made her a national icon and heroine of Indonesia.
On Monday, 19th April 2021, our school community came together at our division assemblies, to honour and pay tribute to Ibu Kartini, a pioneer in education for girls and women’s rights in Indonesia. Our division assemblies heralded the theme, Our Present Day Kartini: Tenacious, Intelligent and Caring. The assemblies aimed to commemorate and highlight the positive values that Ibu Kartini embraced in her living years and hoped to inspire our students to live out these values in their everyday lives.
At the assemblies, students were introduced to a variety of successful women of today who have contributed and made positive impact to our societies. Students also shared their reflections from the anecdotes of Ibu Kartini’s life and discussed ways on how they can demonstrate or embody those values and learnings today.
Students were treated to several poetry recitation by their peers. The closing remarks were given by Ibu Okky Asokawati, a member of DPR-RI (2009 – 2019) who is also a well-known model, and owner and coach of Okky.Walla Modelling. She encouraged our (female) students to be confident in working towards their dreams and urged our male students to be respectful towards women and to see their female peers and equals and partners in building and serving the nation.Ibu Kartini may no longer be around but her legacy lives on and we hope that our students will build on her legacy for a more inclusive and greater Nusantara!
