2nd Winner at SPK Educational Awards 2024 – Teacher Category: Mr. Marsel BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi Brought Fulfilling Achievement

For their dedication to education through teaching and learning, teachers at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi also proved their enthusiasm and excellence through various activities related to the education sector. So, it is unsurprising that those figures’ commitments gained recognition beyond words they can describe. 

With a delighted heart, one of our precious community members at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, Mr. Marsel, has continuously earned appreciation through 2024. Upon becoming 1st Prize winner of the K12 Track, he also received a precious SPK Educational Awards 2024 award.

A Glimpse of Marsel, Our Math Teacher

Students of both Secondary Schools at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi might already be familiar with his appearance through Mathematics subjects. Mr. Marsel joined our school in 2019 after graduating with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Science Education from Pelita Harapan University. 

As a teacher, he did not stop learning, and therefore, he pursued his studies and earned his master’s degree in math science from the Indonesian Open University. Moreover, he broadened his perspective and enriched his experience through numerous prestigious local and international calls for competition in education, as follows.

• National Learning Innovation Competition 2022,
• Nomination for The Dedicated Teacher Award 2022, 
• Mathematics Teaching and Learning Model Sam Ratulangi Award 2023, 
• Winner of The Teaching in 21st Century Teacher Award Competition 2023 by UNESCO IITE and NetDragon,
• 1st Winner in the Lomba Inovasi Karya Guru (LINKAR 2024) category High School organised by PT. Astra International Tbk.,
• Winner of 1st Prize in The Global Citizen on Design for Future Education K12 Track, along with his collaborators at BINUS SCHOOL, Mr Shakti (Physics teacher) and Mr Nugroho (Science – Biology teacher). 

An Appreciation of Teachers’ Impact on the Indonesian Educational Sector

In addition to his aforementioned lengthy achievement, Mr. Marsel also placed as the 2nd Winner of the Teacher Awards organised by the Indonesian SPK School community in October 2024. 

SPK, which stands for Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama (or cooperative education unit), is a community of Indonesian schools with cooperation or partnership programs with Foreign Educational Institutions. 

This community organises this annual award as a form of appreciation and showcase of the best and innovative practices contributing to accelerating Indonesian education quality. 

The SPK Educational Awards presented three main award categories: The Teacher Award, The Student Award, and The School Leader Award. Each category targeted eligible SPK High School students, SPK teachers at all levels, and the SPK School leaders across Indonesia. 

Although the category numbers are lean, the selection process is known to be very competitive with three tight mechanisms. The reason is that the SPK Educational Award emphasises the excellent contribution of candidates in optimising educational practices. 

Correspondingly, they also set objectives in selecting candidates with projects that create a conducive environment fostering lifelong learning. Therefore, candidates and nominees for each level should participate in the paper submission, verification and selection, and final presentation for selected candidates. 

This year’s award selections with the “Impactful Leading Mind” theme began in July 2024. It ended with a highlight of the last phase on October 10 through the SPK Convention Event Award Night. 

What Project Has Brought Mr. Marsel to Win The Award?

With his extensive teaching experience and deep wit, Mr. Marsel implemented a unique approach using the integration of mathematics to help students learn better about traditional Indonesian musical instruments. 

During the learning process, he also paired his approach with AI and Desmos to help students find the volume of each instrument. The innovative activities resulted in three final products that allow students to understand the concept better and experience the application of Integral while getting to know one of Indonesia’s heritage.

The project and Mr. Marsel’s award for the SPK Education Award 2024 impacted his personal and professional spectrum. Not only did he open the mindset of his students, but he also proved that challenges in the educational sector could be handled and managed through creative methods.
