Transforming Communities: BIM Awardees Drive Sustainability and Social Change with Lokavita Project

BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi is proud of the students who received Beasiswa Indonesia Maju (BIM) scholarship. Four Upper Secondary students were selected for their passion and visions in community development. The BIM awardees have shown their achievements through Lokavita Project, which focuses on sustainability and community support.

What is Lokavita Project?

Lokavita Project was born from the initiatives of BIM awardees from BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi: Arya, Kezia, Winner, and Kayla. The project is their program to give contribution  to the community beyond the academic means.

The students centered the project on the community around the landfill of Bantargebang. They focused on two things: education for local children and sustainable projects with economic values for locals. Here are some activities they started as a part of Lokavita Project:

• Creating A Reading Space

The BIM awardees initiated a reading space called Pojok Baca (Reading Corner). The space offers a wide range of books for children to expand their knowledge and answer their curiosity. They can also explore their interests and creativity with the Reading Corner volunteers.

With this reading space, children from the local community around Bantargebang landfill can get equal opportunities with other kids to explore and develop their creativity.

• Creating Inclusive Learning Space

BIM awardees partnered with local community and volunteers to create an inclusive learning space for the children of Bantargebang. The teachers provided basic education and opened opportunities for the children to pursue education. 

This program used the already-available plots and properties at Bantargebang to be turned into schools. Students can learn while being close with their friends and get useful knowledge and skills.

• Planning Sustainable Business Model

BIM awardees proposed a plan to help locals create goods with economic values from recycled trash. This project supports both economic and sustainability goals, ensuring that locals can continue the business model even with minimum guidance. 

This sustainable business model can also be extended to all parts of the community. For example, children can learn how to make simple crafts from recycled trash in a fun way.

Lokavita Project is a part of the philosophy embraced by the scholarship and BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi. It extends the awardees’ knowledge and experiences beyond the classrooms. The program also provides support for the community to improve their quality of life.

Lokavita Project brought several benefits for the awardees and the community, such as:

• Experiences for the Future

The BIM awardees gained useful soft skills and experiences from all their activities. For example, they learned to plan project concepts, communicate with various members of the community, and collaborate. These new skills and experiences will help them to succeed in higher education, future employment, and further social activities.

• Contributing to the Community

Lokavita Project and other similar programs are parts of contribution to the community. Students learned to study unique challenges faced by different communities and created suitable programs for them. It encourages the younger generations to create a positive impact for their community.

• Fostering Future Leaders

Leaders are nurtured and fostered, and BIM awardees are in a good position for that. Lokavita Project gave them the opportunity to learn leadership skills. They must utilise leadership traits like critical thinking, adaptation, good communication skill, active listening, and responsibility. This way, these students can hopefully become future leaders who bring positive impacts.
