Youth Innovation for Sustainable Design

Four high school contestants from BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi participated in the 2025 Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge and won second place. Vylovy, Michi, Kaira, and Serena utilized the biomimicry concept to create a solution for infrastructure damage caused by erosion. Exceptional teachers Mr. Nunu and Mr. Syakti served as their advisors and guides, helping the students refine their concept and secure second place, with invaluable support from the BINUS University team and the wider BINUS community. This collaborative effort underscores the shared dedication to innovation and excellence that defines BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi.

The project, a biomimicry solution to prevent infrastructure damage from erosion, addressed a common problem in many Indonesian regions. The team drew inspiration from mangrove fringes, turbo snails, and brain corals in their research on mitigating the effects of high-energy waves. Using nature’s design as muse, the team focused on how these plants and animals utilise wave-dissipating structures in their anatomy.

The team’s research showcased ingenuity in drawing inspiration from nature and applying it to a pressing contemporary problem. Mr. Nunu and Mr. Syakti provided invaluable guidance based on the biomimicry curriculum to help the students focus their efforts. Equally important was the support from the BINUS University team, who contributed design analysis from an engineering perspective and provided essential simulation data, enriching the project’s foundation. Their award-winning design concept highlighted how we can learn from nature to address environmental and sustainability challenges effectively.

Youth Design Challenge and #SchoolOfResearch

The participation and victory of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi students at the 2025 Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge showcased the vision for #SchoolOfResearch.

BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi is more than just an international school. We commit to becoming an institution with a strong research foundation. Our education programme and learning methods are designed to foster key traits associated with a research culture.

This recent participation in the Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge demonstrated important traits and skills our students have developed at our School of Research, such as:

Creative Problem Solving

BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi students showed their ability to draw inspiration from nature to solve modern issues. They studied various plants and animals to develop solutions to sustainability and environmental issues. This type of creative problem-solving is crucial for research and knowledge development.

Creativity in problem-solving is important for finding unique solutions, especially for long-term problems. The team’s ability to present distinguished concepts in their projects shows great potential to solve modern problems in the future.

Strong Observation Skill

Students focused specifically on parts of snails, corals, and mangroves that dissipate water currents. This was because they needed to find solutions for structural damage caused by erosion. Their keen observation skills allowed them to make realistic connections between snails, corals, mangroves, and modern buildings.

Care about the Most Current Issues

Students at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi are encouraged to pay attention to pressing, crucial issues. Environmental and sustainability issues are among the most important ones, including in their relations with architecture and urban planning. Through this project, our team of four students demonstrated care and attention for pressing issues.

Collaboration and Partnership

In the world of research, partnerships and collaboration are vital, particularly for large and complex projects. Vylovy, Michi, Kaira, and Serena exemplified an admirable collaborative spirit, sharing their observations and tasks under the guidance of our dedicated teachers. Their teamwork, supported not just by the BINUS University team but also by the wider BINUS community, was a crucial factor in their impressive second-place finish. This collective effort underscores the importance of a cohesive support system in fostering innovation and problem-solving in research contexts.

Expanded Horizons and Perspectives

Research and innovation, especially in crucial issues like sustainability, require wide perspectives. At BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, students learn to find solutions by examining many possibilities, perspectives, and ideas. This way, they can solve problems through ingenuity, especially if the problems are complicated and require sophisticated solutions.
