MATH & SCIENCE FAIR

This year, ECY-EL Math and Science Fair highlighted the need to make smart choices about managing one of environment biggest problems in our daily life, which is waste. Being informed of the right ways to handle waste is important in order to live more sustainably and reduce our environmental footprint.
Sorting trash
After learning the importance of sorting trash, our ECY 1 – 3 students took real actions in a variety of fun filled science and mathematics-related activities. Students applied their ability to sort, match shapes and group objects based on the required criteria.
Junk to Jewel Drive
We, as a society, accumulate tons of waste—from paper, plastic, metal to food and books. Through Junk to Jewel Drive our EL students learned that these waste can be sold, recycled and eventually they can be used to make new things. In addition to that, students also had a variety of hands-on learning experiences such as making estimation of how much money they would make from the waste they collected, using analog and digital scale to weigh waste and calculating the total amount of money they made from the sales.
Composting
Every day, almost all household generates organic waste that comes from foods. Through composting activity, our ECY-EL students learned how to convert leftover food / organic waste into compost which is important for plants. Leftover food can be put in a composting bin. When mixed with bits of wood, cardboard, dead leaves and other things, the food eventually breaks down and turns into compost. During the activity, our ECY and lower elementary students learned to measure and weigh the right composition using non-standard unit of measurements
Upcycling Auction
We all have items that no longer serves any purpose around the house, but we still have trouble getting rid of it. Through this activity, our EL 3 – 6 students learned to transformed these non-valuable items into new items that serve new purpose and have aesthetic value.
The curated products are sold in a silent auction where parents are invited to bid. With their kind support and generosity, we managed to collect Rp 4,475,000 from the auction. Thank you, Parents!
The money from the auction will be donated to a charitable organization of the School’s choice.
