World Earth Day – Our Earth, Our Future #3

On Wednesday, 28th April 2021 BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi took part in the Knowledge Sharing Session organized by our sister school, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong. The topic of the sharing session was “Living Pot – Composting at Home to Minimize the Waste Problem in Our Community”.

Louis Giovanni Marciano (EL2A) proudly shared about his living pot project which was aptly titled, “Gio’s Science Living Pot”. Around 150 teachers and students from both BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi and BINUS SCHOOL Serpong attended this online event. We began the session with Gio’s presentation about the background information of his living pot project, which was followed by a presentation and demonstration on how the living pot works. Using his project as an example, Gio shared his brilliant idea on how we can reduce waste by making use of food scraps at home to produce liquid fertilizer for plants. His living pot also had a smart capillary system that allowed liquid fertilizer to be transported directly to the roots of the plant in the same pot. Thus, Gio’s Science Living Pot serves a dual purpose as it was a two-in-one pot for a composter and a plant!

From this sharing session, we learned that we could minimize the waste problem in our community by taking responsibility of the waste we produce at home. A simple thing that we can do is converting our organic wastes into compost. Composting is not only good for the environment, but it is also beneficial to the soil and plants. “Small things can have big impact if it is done collectively”, Gio added.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Gio and Gio’s parents for their great support. We look forward to having more of our students coming forward to participate in the next Knowledge Sharing Session! Let’s build a greener world, BINUSIANS!
