A Young Pencak Silat Medallist from BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi: Raden Ayu Noura Dewantara

Raden Ayu Noura Dewantara (RA Noura Dewantara), preferably called simply by Noura is a primary student in Grade 6 at an international school in Bekasi – BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi. However, she is not an ordinary student, she is a young, skilled martial arts athlete and gold medallist.

By definition, pencak silat is a traditional martial art that has its roots in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. So, when and where did it start for Raden Ayu Noura Dewantara to get exposed to Pencak Silat? 

She said it all begins with her parents; it runs in her family. She further explained that her grandfather was a boxer (a boxing athlete), whereas her mother was a wushu athlete. Wushu is the Chinese term for martial or combat art. 

Seeing her mother and grandfather, the young Noura wanted to enter the world of competitive sports as well. As a result, she started to learn pencak silat when she was six years old.

Her Outstanding Achievements

The young Noura does not consider pencak silat merely a hobby or an activity to fill her schedule. Rather, she learns the martial arts more seriously, with more dedication. She even further took part in competitions and bagged several medals.

The following is the list of distinguished achievements or awards she secured. 

2021 – When she was in the 3rd grade of Elementary 

• Pencak Silat Champion – KOSN Competition 

2022 – When she was in the 4th grade of Elementary 

• 1st Champion – Si Jali Bekasi Championship (March 2022)
• 1st Champion – Arezone Pencak Silat Championship (March 2022)
• 1st Champion – Jakarta Silat Competition (June 2022)
• 1st Champion – Pencak Silat Candrabaga Cup I (July 2022)
• 1st Champion – Arezone Pencak Silat Championship (March 2022)

2023 – When she was in the 5th grade of Elementary 

• 1st Place (Gold Medal) – National Pencak Silat Championship “Panglipur Exhibition 2023” (August 2023) for women’s early age single art category

2024 – 02SN SD Tingkat Nasional 2024

• 1st Place – Solo Creative Putri Category
• 2nd Place – Jurus Tunggal Wajib Merah Putih Group Category

Now, Raden Ayu Noura Dewantara sits in the 6th Grade of Primary in BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi. Still pursuing pencak silat, her latest tournament was the Olimpiade Olahraga Siswa Nasional 2024 (O2SN 2024).

Before winning first place, she had to participate in the selection from Kecamatan to Regency or City and then to the next selection of Province. Bandung has been the usual winner of the West Java province level. However, she shockingly broke the record and became the first winner from Bekasi. 

According to RA Noura Dewantara, the key to her victory is just to convince herself to win the tournament and always listen and do what her parents and coaches tell her to do. Also, she said that herself is the biggest challenge since she has to fight her laziness and convince herself to win the game.

Upon winning first place in the O2SN 2024, Noura is very grateful not only to her parents and coaches but also to her school. She thanked BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi for giving her a channel for her skills and talent in pencak silat. The school even accompanied her to the tournament.
