Solar-Powered Energy Streetlights: Innovative Renewable Energy Project of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi Developed by Bryan from Grade 12

BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi initiated a pilot project in renewable energy implementation with our senior-year student, Bryan Rasya Kambuno, from grade 12. The aim was to start and promote the use of renewable energy resources.

With dedication, passion, and collaboration, the project had fruitful results. Let’s unroll the exciting story from Bryan Rasya Kambuno, our innovative student, who made a remarkable milestone through this model project.

The Solar Energy Pilot Project was started to implement the Sustainability Development Program in every aspect of daily operations in BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi. Besides, as we help students discover new horizons, we also consider teaching students about SDGs crucial.

Thus, we decided to have students involved in this project, and that was why we invited Bryan to join hands in developing this project. Bryan enthusiastically worked on this project with the Building Management (BM) Team, from ideation to execution.

Through the project, he successfully launched his renewable energy innovation, using streetlights fully powered by solar energy. Currently, there are 4 streetlights with full solar energy in the school environment.

These results should be taken seriously since there are still very few streetlights in Indonesia that are fully powered by solar energy. Besides, this breakthrough also revealed that this project allows them to reduce some carbon emissions.

Hands-On Learning Experience of Renewable Energy Concept

Throughout the long process of the solar energy installation project at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, Bryan was able to actively participate and learn about the installation process of the structure.

Mr. Khalim(the manager of building management team), responsible for coordinating the Building Management team, procurement, and Bryan for this project, saw that it was an excellent opportunity for the school and Bryan. This is because the school can facilitate a broader promotion of green energy and technology in its environment.

Correspondingly, student involvement in this project allowed them to have hands-on experience, which honed their understanding of SDG and other soft and hard skills.

For Mr. Khalim, Bryan’s engagement in this project has exceeded his expectations. Not only did Bryan rapidly grasp the concept of solar energy technology, but he also practically applied his understanding and the technology itself. He also accomplished the project with inspiring creativity and leadership skills.

To get a deeper insight into Bryan’s participation in this pilot project, let’s unfold the background story from his point of view.

His Motivation

Bryan has been discovering renewable energy since elementary, and his parents frequently discussed the subject with him, inspiring him. When he heard about this project, Bryan considered sharing his interest and knowledge in this subject with his peers and community at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi.

Beyond that, Bryan personally hoped that this project would be an initial step for his school to develop and implement further utilization of more renewable energy resources.

Those brimming aspirations in his mind encourage him to dedicate his time and knowledge to this project enthusiastically.

Along with the Building Management Team, they decided to exploit solar energy, the simplest form of renewable energy, for this model project. Bryan stated that he started the project’s design in grade 11.

During each phase, Bryan collaborated and discussed with his mentor, Mr. Khalim, and the Biology teacher, Mr. Nugroho, how to deliver an effective process and reach a successful closure for this project.

What Has Come His Way

While his motivation and dedication to this renewable energy were already deeply rooted, Bryan also explained that he had encountered various challenges, primarily time management.

During grade 11, Bryan still managed to give plenty of time to prepare and work on the project. However, when he moved to grade 12, he also had more responsibility in terms of academics. This reality left him less time to concentrate on the project with his peers, teammates, and the Building Management Team of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi.

Despite the hurdles he faced, Bryan saw this as an opportunity for growth and could still juggle all that he had on his plate. He was also grateful that the project successfully reduced carbon emissions in his school environment.

Whilst BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi fully endorsed all the funding and provided the manpower and structures for this pilot project, dedication, passion, and collaboration formed its positive outcome.

Moreover, this pilot project outcome sets the stone for more initiatives of eco-friendliness and sustainability at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi’s environment and culture.
